AN AGE OF UPHEAVAL
Where is our world headed in the midst and aftermath of COVID-19? What are the forces that shape our world? How do different agencies react to the unprecedented waves of disruptions? Inspired by Jared Diamond’s seminal work, Upheaval, this conference addresses the current states of national and global crises and the future possibilities of coming upheavals. In the morning panels, presenters will focus on several ongoing and coming upheavals—such as the pandemic, climate change, depletion of natural resources, inequalities, immigration crisis, and political polarization—and examine how the state has responded to these challenges both positively and negatively. They will focus on why social, economic, political, and legal dislocations occur and how government policies devastate the environment, produce exclusions, and disadvantage certain social groups. In the afternoon panels, presenters will turn to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and examine its double-edged nature, while exploring the potential of using it for solving national and world problems. They further investigate the means to facilitate solutions for national and world problems and reflect on the roles of the non-profit sector, entrepreneurs, businesses, and government agencies. They will bring to light citizens and NGOs’ abilities to use reason and rationality to counterweight disruptive and disorganizing forces of the market, technology, and the state. The 2022 Sungkyunkwan International Conference brings together world-renowned scholars and promising professionals with different backgrounds and expertise, ranging from geography, psychology, economics, sociology, political science, education, public administration, computer science, and human-computer interaction.
